    When Everybody Else Feels It

    Jon Fredricks

    Today's Scripture: Jonah 4:1-3 NIV

    __________

    Jonah 3:10 NIV

10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

    Jonah 4:1-3 NIV

But to Jonah this seemed very wrong, and he became angry. 2 He prayed to the Lord, “Isn’t this what I said, Lord, when I was still at home? That is what I tried to forestall by fleeing to Tarshish. I knew that you are a gracious and compassionate God, slow to anger and abounding in love, a God who relents from sending calamity. 3 Now, Lord, take away my life, for it is better for me to die than to live.”

    1) TRUST GOD WITH HIS BUSINESS (JUSTICE)

    1 Corinthians 13:6-7 NIV

6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

    Romans 12:19 NIV

Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.

    John 21:21-22 NIV

21 When Peter saw him, he asked, “Lord, what about him?” 22 Jesus answered, “If I want him to remain alive until I return, what is that to you? You must follow me.”

    Romans 14:13 NIV

13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister

    2) FOCUS ON FAITH BEFORE THE FEELING

    Galatians 5:6b NIV

The only thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love.

    Matthew 11:28 NIV

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

    3) PRACTICE GRATITUDE

    1 Thessalonians 5:18 NIV

18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

    Philippians 4:6-7 NIV

6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

    2 Thessalonians 1:3 NIV

We ought always to thank God for you, brothers and sisters, and rightly so, because your faith is growing more and more, and the love all of you have for one another is increasing.

    4) PRAY FOR LOVE

    John 13:34-35 NIV

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

    1 John 4:7 NIV

Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God.

    Romans 15:13 NIV

13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

    1 Corinthians 13:6-7 NIV

6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.

    Doing "God Stuff" Again

    Today's Scripture: Jonah 3:1-10 NIV

    __________

    Jonah 3:1-10 NIV

Then the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time: 2 “Go to the great city of Nineveh and proclaim to it the message I give you.” 3 Jonah obeyed the word of the Lord and went to Nineveh. Now Nineveh was a very large city; it took three days to go through it.4 Jonah began by going a day’s journey into the city, proclaiming, “Forty more days and Nineveh will be overthrown.” 5 The Ninevites believed God. A fast was proclaimed, and all of them, from the greatest to the least, put on sackcloth. 6 When Jonah’s warning reached the king of Nineveh, he rose from his throne, took off his royal robes, covered himself with sackcloth and sat down in the dust. 7 This is the proclamation he issued in Nineveh: “By the decree of the king and his nobles: Do not let people or animals, herds or flocks, taste anything; do not let them eat or drink. 8 But let people and animals be covered with sackcloth. Let everyone callurgently on God. Let them give up their evil ways and their violence. 9 Who knows? God may yet relent and with compassion turn from his fierce anger so that we will not perish.” 10 When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he relented and did not bring on them the destruction he had threatened.

    Acts 17:25 NIV

25 And he is not served by human hands, as if he needed anything. Rather, he himself gives everyone life and breath and everything else.

    2 Chronicles 16:9 NIV

9 For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him. You have done a foolish thing, and from now on you will be at war.”

    Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV

8 For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God— 9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

    Matthew 7:22-24 NIV

22 Many will say to me on that day, ‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?’ 23 Then I will tell them plainly, ‘I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!’

    Matthew 7:16-18 NIV

16 By their fruit you will recognize them. Do people pick grapes from thornbushes, or figs from thistles? 17 Likewise, every good tree bears good fruit, but a bad tree bears bad fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit.

    Luke 6:45 NIV

45 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of.

    James 2:14 NIV

14 What good is it, my brothers and sisters, if someone claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save them?

    1) GIVE YOURSELF SOME GRACE

    Jonah 3:1 NIV

    Romans 9:22-23 NIV

22 What if God, although choosing to show his wrath and make his power known, bore with great patience the objects of his wrath—prepared for destruction? 23 What if he did this to make the riches of his glory known to the objects of his mercy, whom he prepared in advance for glory—

    Psalm 103:12 NIV

as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

    2) IDENTIFY THE STEPS

    Jonah 3:1-2 NIV

    3) TAKE SMALL BITES

    Jonah 3:3 NIV

    1 John 5:3 NIV

3 In fact, this is love for God: to keep his commands. And his commands are not burdensome,

    4) TRUST THE REST

    Jonah 3:10 NIV

    Proverbs 3:5-6 NIV

    5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

    __________

    Genesis 3:8-10 NIV

8 Then the man and his wife heard the sound of the Lord God as he was walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and they hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden. 9 But the Lord God called to the man, “Where are you?” 10 He answered, “I heard you in the garden, and I was afraid because I was naked; so I hid.”

    Jonah 1:1 NIV

1 The word of the Lord came to Jonah son of Amittai:

    Jonah 1:3 NIV

3 But Jonah ran away from the Lord...

    Jonah 1:5 NIV

5 All the sailors were afraid and each cried out to his own god. And they threw the cargo into the sea to lighten the ship. But Jonah had gone below deck, where he lay down and fell into a deep sleep.

    Jonah 1:12 NIV

12 “Pick me up and throw me into the sea,” he replied, “and it will become calm. I know that it is my fault that this great storm has come upon you.”

    Jonah 2:1-10 NIV

1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God.

2 He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord,
    and he answered me.
From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help,
and you listened to my cry.

3 You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
    all your waves and breakers
    swept over me.

    4 I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;
    yet I will look again
    toward your holy temple.’

5 The engulfing waters threatened me,
    the deep surrounded me;
seaweed was wrapped around my head.

    6 To the roots of the mountains I sank down;
the earth beneath barred me in forever.
    But you, Lord my God,
brought my life up from the pit.

7 “When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

8 “Those who cling to worthless idols
turn away from God’s love for them.

9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”

10 And the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah onto dry land.

    Matthew 11:28 NIV

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.

    1) DON'T WAIT FOR PERFECT CIRCUMSTANCES

    Jonah 2:1-2 NIV

1 From inside the fish Jonah prayed to the Lord his God. 2 He said: “In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From deep in the realm of the dead I called for help, and you listened to my cry.

    Ecclesiastes 11:4 NIV

4 If you wait for perfect conditions, you will never get anything done.

    2) DON'T WAIT FOR THE PERFECT WORDS

    Jonah 2:3-4 NIV

3 You hurled me into the depths,
into the very heart of the seas,
    and the currents swirled about me;
    all your waves and breakers
    swept over me.

    4 I said, ‘I have been banished
    from your sight;
    yet I will look again

    3) TAKE SIMPLE FIRST STEPS

    Jonah 2:7 NIV

7 “When my life was ebbing away,
    I remembered you, Lord,
and my prayer rose to you,
    to your holy temple.

    4) KEEP IT UP

    Jonah 2:9 NIV

9 But I, with shouts of grateful praise,
    will sacrifice to you.
What I have vowed I will make good.
I will say, ‘Salvation comes from the Lord.’”
