The South Australian Metropolitan Fire Service is today mourning the loss of one of its firefighters.

On Wednesday, 13 August 2025, Commander Adrienne Clarke OAM AFSM, passed away surrounded by family.

Adrienne was a pioneer for women in firefighting, breaking through barriers and paving the way for others to follow.

A third-generation firefighter following in the footsteps of her father and grandfather, Adrienne began her career with the MFS as the first female firefighter in 1987.

Adrienne faced challenges and fought against gender stereotypes. With grit and determination she changed what it meant to be a firefighter, making our service more inclusive and diverse.

Adrienne was a fierce advocate for women in firefighting, championing for equal and appropriate conditions, equipment, uniform and standards.

She was dedicated to serving the community and helping others, organising the MFS Children’s Christmas party to ensure that children of MFS firefighters and those of disadvantaged backgrounds could celebrate the season. She also coordinated the donation of toys to children in the Burns Unit of the Women’s and Children’s Hospital, bringing joy and comfort during difficult times.

Her career, which spanned almost four decades, saw Adrienne rise up MFS ranks to the level of Commander. During this time, she was the recipient of a variety of prestigious awards, including a Medal of the Order of Australia (2019) and an Australian Fire Service Medal (2016).

Adrienne embodied the MFS spirit, demonstrating leadership, compassion, determination, and selflessness. Adrienne’s passing is an enormous loss for the MFS, and wider emergency services community.
