The Root of the Chill (Understanding Lawlessness
Jesus is speaking about the conditions leading up to the end of the age. When we hear "lawlessness," we often think of anarchy or political chaos. While that is included, the Greek word anomia literally means "without law" or "unrighteousness." In a spiritual sense, it is more than just breaking civil laws; it is spiritual rebellion—a deliberate turning away from God's standard (His "law" of love and righteousness) to pursue self-will. This increase in anomia creates a hostile, abrasive spiritual environment that wears down believers.
Reflection Questions:
- How do I define lawlessness? Do I see it primarily as a societal problem, or as a spiritual attitude that can affect my own heart?
- In what specific ways does the unrighteousness or chaos of the world make me feel weary, cynical, or tempted to withdraw?
