The Murder of Johnnie Mae Chappell

On a rainy night in March, 1864, civil unrest erupts in the streets of Jacksonville, Florida. Black Americans, sick and tired of the racist treatment, take to the streets to protest. The night would end with the death of a mother of 10 children and devoted wife, out not too far from her home looking for her wallet she lost on her way home to the grocery store. Her death, a result of the color of her skin.

This episode of Criminal Intent looks into the story of the investigation of Johnnie Mae Chappell and her family's continued quest for justice after 60 years.

Austin, Texas in the late-1800s was starting to become a bustling hub for business. And with the rush of people coming in, unsavory characters also came in with them. The mysterious figure dubbed “The Servant Girl Annihilator,” by the American writer O. Henry, someone would stalk the streets at night, invade the rooms of servants, and brutally attack and kill his victims. Hello! Here is the teaser for the upcoming episode of Criminal Intent. We will be discussing the Servant Girl Murders of Austin, Texas during the year of 1885.

Several brutal murders occurred. The murderer attacked mainly African American servant women during the night and early morning hours. Then, as suddenly as the killings began, they stopped. The killings remain unsolved, but some experts believe they may know who was the most likely culprit.
