A pivotal moment came at Nairobi City Council, where she managed land allocations often rife with corruption. Despite intense political pressure, Monica maintained her ethics and refused to compromise them, leading to a three-month leave. Upon her return, she managed allocations with integrity, demonstrating her commitment to fairness.

Monica’s leadership path was nontraditional. Though excelling academically, she initially trained as a teacher when further education was out of reach. Her passion for learning later led her to study community development and social work, ultimately earning a master’s in development planning. This blend of knowledge and experience shaped her approach to leadership.

One defining moment was her decision to leave her secure role at UNICEF to co-found the Kenya Community Development Foundation (KCDF). Monica's belief in community-driven development motivated her to take on the challenge. Under her leadership, KCDF became a significant organization, empowering communities through grants and capacity building, setting a model for sustainable development.

In retirement, Monica’s leadership continues through NCDA, where she applies the community development models she honed during her career. NCDA's successes include a community-owned savings and credit cooperative (SACCO) with over 8,000 members and 8 million Kenyan shillings in share capital. This initiative supports education, reflecting Monica's commitment to self-reliance.

Monica’s leadership has always been rooted in ethics and transparency. She resisted corruption and political pressure, driven by a strong sense of accountability. Her leadership focuses on setting high standards and leading by example.

Monica often expresses disappointment with African leadership, where material wealth and power overshadow good governance. However, she remains optimistic and encourages future leaders to embrace integrity, accountability, and service. Her advice to emerging leaders is clear: resist the corrupting influence of power, surround yourself with strong, independent people, and prioritize transparency.
