  • The Five Jars by M. R. James ~ Full Audiobook [fantasy]
    Mar 3 2026
The Five Jars by M. R. James audiobook. Genre: fantasy Told as a confidential letter to a girl named Jane, The Five Jars follows a quiet, bookish gentleman whose country holiday turns uncanny when a murmuring stream seems to speak to him. Drawn deeper into the woods by half-heard words and a vivid, impossible dream, he finds a strange plant exactly where his sleep promised it would be - and after a rash experiment, his senses begin to change. What starts as a curious trick of sight becomes a doorway: buried under the earth lies an ancient metal box, sealed until moonlight cracks it open to reveal five small jars marked with cryptic Latin instructions. Used with care, their contents sharpen and alter perception itself, granting the narrator access to a hidden neighborhood of the world: the Right People, small and secretive, and the animals who know far more than they should. Wonder quickly gathers an edge. Word of the jars spreads in ways the narrator cannot control, and predatory forces - witches, wizards, and other night-haunting enemies - begin probing for the prize. Part fairy tale, part antiquarian mystery, M. R. James builds a tense, twilight adventure about curiosity, caution, and the peril of seeing too much. • The Measurement of Intelligence by Lewis Terman ~ Full Audiobook [science]
    Mar 2 2026
The Measurement of Intelligence by Lewis Terman audiobook. Genre: science In The Measurement of Intelligence, psychologist Lewis M. Terman lays out the early twentieth-century case for making human ability measurable. Best known for refining the Binet-Simon scale into what became the Stanford-Binet, Terman explains how standardized tasks, careful scoring, and statistical comparison can be used to estimate mental development and to distinguish typical progress from significant delay or exceptional advancement. Moving from principles to practice, he discusses how tests are designed and administered, what different kinds of items are meant to capture, and how results can be interpreted for schools, clinics, and research. Along the way, Terman addresses the practical questions that still surround assessment: reliability, sources of error, the influence of age and schooling, and the dangers of overconfident conclusions. The book also reveals the ambitions and anxieties of its era, when intelligence testing was rapidly becoming a tool for sorting students and shaping educational policy. Both a technical guide and a historical window into the origins of IQ testing, this work invites listeners to consider what measurements can illuminate - and what they can easily distort - about the mind. • Intelligence Tests and School Reorganisation by Lewis Terman ~ Full Audiobook [science]
    Feb 28 2026
Intelligence Tests and School Reorganisation by Lewis Terman audiobook. Genre: science In Intelligence Tests and School Reorganisation, psychologist Lewis M. Terman makes the case that the modern school can no longer rely on age, intuition, or tradition to place students and plan instruction. Drawing on the early rise of standardized mental measurement, Terman explains what intelligence tests can and cannot tell educators, then turns to the practical question: how should a school system change once it begins measuring differences in learning rate and academic readiness? Through clear examples and policy-minded argument, he explores grouping and promotion, identification of students who need remedial support, opportunities for rapid advancement, and the design of special classes and curricula that match students' abilities. Terman also confronts the administrative stakes - staffing, record keeping, and the promises and risks of using test data to guide decisions that affect real children and families. Written for superintendents, principals, teachers, and civic leaders, this book captures a pivotal moment in educational psychology, when measurement was offered as a tool for both efficiency and fairness, and when schools were being asked to justify how they serve every student. I've now listened to several of these 800+ (and growing) episodes/books, and sampled many more. They are read well, for the most part, and cover a broad range of topics, authors and time periods. There are both fiction and non-fiction, children's, YA and adult titles. I assume all are in the public domain, whether by lapsed or expired copyright. A number of the series' titles are otherwise unavailable for free through Audible, but the edition for sale on Audible will likely be a better reading or translation. I haven't checked, but some of the more obsure titles are likely not available at all. Some have attributions to Librivox, but a variety of sources seem to be drawn from. The biggest drawback, due to the podcast/episode structure of the collection, is that you can't search by title or author, only by upload date. You must load page after page until you find (or don't find) a title or author you're hoping is in the collection. But what do you want for FREE? There are both diamonds and lumps of coal in this mine. You just have to keep digging until you find your diamonds.
