Chapter One

At the fortress of Yenarinvahl the Vahd family prepares for the journey to the Crag to compete to replace the dying Knight Commander Santaris Sendus. Ariston, the young and feckless Knight Commander of the fortress and the entire region of Enarin prepares for greatness and yet fails to understand the first principals of politics or rulership. Across the long and dark roads of Enarin, Paida Sivran and her daughter Karli are summoned to the castle to join the entourage that will cross the land to the Crag and in the depths of the nearest tavern and embittered falconer makes a fateful pact with a stranger.
