Harry is able to not only frighten but also in a way control dementors. He figures out how summon them using only his mind and internal magic and the dementors descend upon the death eaters who can not produce a patronus charm. This would result in most of the death eaters dying and Voldemort becoming weakened and fleeing.

the answer lies in the risk of telling things to Voldemort harry will leverage his binding vow to his advantage and will use an inability to risk telling Voldemort certain secrets to his advantage.
