The field of international sports arbitration stands at a critical juncture following the Grand Chamber judgment of the European Court of Human Rights in Caster Semenya v. Switzerland, delivered on 10 July 2025.
In this episode, hosts Vincent and Yağmur speak with Cem Kalelioğlu, Counsel at WilmerHale London's international arbitration practice group, about the legal and institutional implications of this decision for the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
We explore what the ECtHR’s finding of a violation of Article 6 ECHR means for the legitimacy of CAS, how the unique structure of international sports governance raises concerns about consent and fairness, and whether institutional reform is now unavoidable.
This conversation also reflects on the role of Swiss law in shaping sports arbitration and asks what comes next for the resolution of disputes in global sport.
