November 1985, Germany: Elizabeth Ratliff found dead at bottom of stairs - Peterson was last to see her alive, adopted her two orphaned daughters. December 2001, North Carolina: Wife Kathleen Peterson found dead at bottom of stairs in pool of blood - seven lacerations to her head. Peterson's 911 call: "My wife had an accident. She's still breathing." She wasn't. Police discovered Peterson's secret bisexual affairs, financial troubles, and lies about his military record. The trial would become one of North Carolina's longest.

Convicted of first-degree murder. Life without parole. Acquitted in double homicide five days before hanging himself in his cell. Age 27. Brain showed severe CTE. Conviction reinstated 2019.

February 14, 2013: Olympic hero Oscar Pistorius fired four hollow-point bullets through his bathroom door, killing girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp. She was 29, a model and law graduate who advocated against domestic violence. He claimed intruder. She was found with her phone in the bathroom - why would an intruder bring a phone? Neighbors heard screaming before the shots. Text messages revealed fear: "I'm scared of u sometimes." Found guilty of murder after appeals. Served 8.5 years. Released January 2024. Now 38, dating again while Reeva's mother serves a life sentence of grief.

September 2021: Finally convicted of murdering Susan Berman. Sentenced to life. January 2022: Dead at 78, taking Kathie's location to his grave.
