Hosted by Dr. Brandon Blue and produced by the Office of Community Outreach and Engagement, at Moffitt Cancer Center, Cancer in Our Community is a podcast that discusses Black health disparities. Why? Because while cancer is a disease that could affect any of us or our loved ones, the Black community is at greater risk. Whether that's through poor diagnosis or treatment, Black people are more likely to develop and die from many cancers. But there are those studying how to close these gaps in health care and ensure that Black patients and those close to them receive the care that they deserve. All rights reserved Ciencia Ciencias Biológicas

  • Mr. Travis Coy & Dr. Parmvir Bahia - The Caregiver's Episode part 1
    Aug 5 2025
Cancer is a profoundly disabling illness, whether that is due to side effects from the life-saving treatments or the disease itself. Understandably then, patients need constant and vital support in the form of caregivers, but who do we consider to be a caregiver, and what does their role involve? In this episode we discuss the essential role of caregivers, who qualifies as a caregiver, and the responsibilities they take on. We also address an important question: who looks after the caregivers when they themselves are impacted? Join us as we uncover the challenges and rewards of caregiving in the context of cancer, and highlight the importance of support for those who give so much to others. • Dr. Dorothie Durosier Mertilus & Dr. Clement Gwede - Sante! To your good health
    Jun 19 2025
June is recognized in the US as Caribbean-American Heritage Month. So what better time to say Sante! or Cheers! to recognize the important achievements of researchers working to support members of the Caribbean community. We speak with Dr. Dorothie Durosier Mertilus about how important it is it literally be able to speak someone’s language; in her case French or Haitian Creole. We hear from from Dr. Clement Gwede, the scientist whose lab is out in the community. Coming at gaps in care from different angles means that patients can be supported in meaningful ways, to offer them the best outcomes.
