    Today’s Episode:

Late last week, the Israeli security cabinet approved a proposal by Prime Minister Netanyahu to conquer Gaza City, where roughly half the Gazan population resides, and which has been largely untouched by the IDF thus far.

This decision has prompted widespread international backlash, which was already mounting from concerns over a possible food crisis in Gaza. It also comes as more countries move to recognize a Palestinian state, forcing us to grapple with the high price Israel is paying on the global stage for the ongoing Gaza war.

With this in mind, on today’s episode, Dan speaks with Dr. Micah Goodman about whether there’s a difference between winning the war in Gaza and winning the wider, regional war. Is it possible that Israel will need to modify its definition of victory in Gaza in order to emerge victorious in the larger re-shaping of the geopolitics of the Middle East?

Micah Goodman is a research fellow at the Shalom Hartman Institute and co-host of the popular Israeli podcast Mifleget Hamachshavot produced by Beit Avi Chai.

    Today’s Episode:

Prime Minister Netanyahu is expected to present the cabinet with a plan for the full military occupation of Gaza today. According to reports, the plan’s first phase entails the evacuation of Gaza City and an expansion of humanitarian aid, in coordination with the United States. The second phase would see an IDF takeover of Gaza City with an even bigger expansion of aid, backed by $1 billion from the U.S. and other countries.

This comes despite pushback from IDF Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir and other security officials, who — according to reports — have serious concerns about the risks of this military expansion.

To discuss this breaking news, Dan is joined by Ark Media contributors Amit Segal and Nadav Eyal. You can hear more of Dan’s thoughts on the subject at the beginning of today’s INSIDE Call me Back episode.

There’s been some developing news out of Israel – namely, the possibility of a full-scale Israeli occupation of the Gaza strip – and we didn’t want to do a full episode on it quite yet. Instead, we’re trying out a new format here, by sending Call me Back contributors Amit Segal and Nadav Eyal a voice memo, asking for their thoughts on the news.

    Today’s Episode:

For over a week, global attention has been focused on a food crisis in Gaza. Though there have been endless false reports of mass starvation since the beginning of the war, this time, many Israelis have accepted concerns about hunger among Gazans are legitimate.

This raises questions about how humanitarian aid has been distributed over the past few months. To discuss this – as well as how humanitarian aid distribution should be executed – we are joined by Yotam Polizer.

Yotam is the global CEO of ISRAAID, the largest humanitarian aid organization in Israel, which has operated in 12 different countries. Since October 7th, 2023, ISRAAID has also worked inside Israel to rehabilitate Israeli victims of the October 7 Hamas attack, and helped facilitate the transfer of humanitarian aid and medical support to Palestinian civilians in Gaza.

    Today’s Episode:

On Wednesday, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that the Canadian government will recognize a Palestinian State at the United Nations meeting set for September. On Tuesday, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer declared that the UK will do the same – that is, unless Israel (and only Israel) meets a set of conditions. Canada and France followed the lead of French President Emanuel Macron, who announced a few days ago that France will recognize a Palestinian State at the September UN meeting.

These developments come as Israel’s global image plummets, according to a recent Gallup survey.

To discuss how we got to this point – where Israel’s response to Hamas’ October 7th attack is prompting European countries to recognize a Palestinian State – we are joined by Ari Shavit, former correspondent at Haaretz and author of the award winning book My Promised Land.

Before the interview, we take a moment to remember Wesley LePatner.

    Today’s Episode:

On Thursday, French President Emanuel Macron announced that France will recognize a Palestinian state at the UN meeting set to take place in September. France will become the first major Western country to recognize a Palestinian state, prompting many to wonder if this will set off a chain reaction. Is it possible that Hamas’ savage attack could set off a chain of events that results in the establishment of a Palestinian state?

Meanwhile, there has been a lot of press in recent days about starvation among Gazans. Research by Yannay Spitzer of Hebrew University on the price of flour in the Gaza Strip has convinced many reluctant Israelis that this time, unlike before, the reports of starvation are real. In response, Israel announced that it will halt military operations for 10 hours a day in parts of the strip, as Jordan and the UAE resumed airdrops of humanitarian aid.

To discuss the food crisis and the significance of President Macron’s declaration, we were joined by Call me Back contributors Nadav Eyal and Amit Segal.

    Today’s Episode:

Last week, we witnessed the eruption of violent aggression on behalf of the Syrian government and local Bedouin tribes against Syria’s southern Druze community, leaving more than 1,400 people dead. The Druze are a community that also has deep roots in Israel, and over 1,000 Israeli Druze citizens crossed the Israel-Syria border to support their brothers and sisters being attacked.

In response, Israel launched a series of strikes against military facilities in Damascus, prompting widespread global criticism. As of Saturday, all sides have agreed to a ceasefire. However, we are still seeing reports and videos on social media of Druze being attacked in Southern Syria.

Many are asking what to make of Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, a former Al Qaeda affiliate who claims to have moderated. People are also wondering to what extent Turkey – a supporter of the new Syrian regime – played a role in what’s unfolded in Syria.

Joining us to discuss – and at points, debate – these complex questions are Charles Lister, senior fellow and director of the Syria Initiative at the Middle East Institute, and Hay Eitan Cohen Yanarocak, researcher of modern-day Turkey at the Moshe Dayan Center for Middle Eastern and African Studies at Tel Aviv University.
