  • AI Shortcuts
    Mar 11 2026

AI is everywhere right now, and I've been thinking a lot about the shortcuts it enables. Some are the wrong kind — like replacing myself with a cloned voice in release videos. Others are the right kind — like using AI to handle everything around creating a podcast episode so I can focus on actually talking to you.

In this episode, I share my experiments with AI-generated Laravel release videos (cool but not where we want to go) and how my bot Jarvy now handles the entire podcast publishing workflow — from normalizing audio to uploading to Transistor.fm — so all I have to do is hit record.

The takeaway: AI should help with the stuff around what we do, not replace the human parts.

  • Back from Being Back
    Feb 26 2026

Back in October, after a year and a half without podcasting, I recorded an episode called "I'm Back." I felt ready — more energy, more time, the kids settling in. Then almost two months went by without another episode.

So what happened? Family life happened. Our second kid is nine months old and still a terrible sleeper. Between work, home, and trying to squeeze in some sports, there's barely room for side projects, blog posts, or podcasts.

But I'm not gone either. I'm motivated, I want to share things — there's so much happening with AI, with dev life, with everything. I just can't promise consistency right now. What I can say: I have a better workflow now for recording episodes (more on that soon), and I have plenty of thoughts to share.

So am I back? Not really. Am I gone? Definitely not. Somewhere in between. Let's see where it goes.

  • Does Being Good at Something Actually Matter?
    Feb 26 2026

I had this moment where I felt really proud about my progress in bouldering. I was crushing hard problems, feeling strong. But then a thought crept in: if someone else put in the same hours, they'd probably be just as good. Maybe even better.

So is it even an achievement? Is being good at something just about finding where your talent lies and putting in the time? And if everyone can theoretically do that... does it matter?

I talked about this with my wife and went down a bit of a rabbit hole — talent vs. effort, comparing yourself to others vs. your past self, and why feeling good about what you've done should be enough.
