Today's race relations are deteriorating at an alarming rate. Politics in America are at a crossroads as effective government is becoming impossible. Much like in 1860, today feels more like the time leading up into the civil war than any other time in our history. Can peaceful means of secession still be achieved today in time before the country descends into chaos as it once did? Alternate history allows us to ask "what if?" questions like: what would America look like today if there had been no civil war, and a peaceful secession had been allowed instead?
In this episode we explore this "what if" question in a case of alternate history. Seeing as how slavery was indeed NOT the central reason for war, we can ponder if or when slavery might've become abolished or phased out in the Confederacy. With that, we can imagine how less tensions might've ironically allowed for an even more unified America today than what we currently have. We can then apply this idea to current secession movements and gauge how well such a move may or may not go.
