This week we’re exploring one of the most challenging situations a relief teacher can face: stepping into a school community in the midst of trauma. From serious accidents to natural disasters, or even the loss of a community member, schools sometimes experience events that shake everyone — students, staff, and families alike. And in these moments, CRTs are often called in to support classrooms, maintain stability, and help keep learning spaces calm and safe. But how do you approach these situations with sensitivity and professionalism when you’re not part of the ongoing school narrative? What does supportive practice look like when emotions are heightened? And just as importantly, how do you look after your own wellbeing while working in an environment that may be carrying shock, grief, or uncertainty? This week, our panel, two of whom with deep experience in crisis‑affected schools unpack practical strategies for navigating these moments with care, clarity, and confidence. We discuss what’s reasonable to expect of yourself, how to read the room, how to work alongside permanent staff, and ways to maintain your own steadiness while supporting others. A vital conversation for every CRT, and one that will leave you better prepared for the unexpected.
