  • Meet The Brewer Part 3 - Simon Osborn & Ady Fitter from Rocks Brewing Co
    Nov 24 2020

We continue with the Meet The Brewer Series, where I sit down with Co-Founders and Head Brewers from 6 Sydney breweries, to get their stories, insights and advice.

In today’s episode, I sit down with Managing Director Simon Osborn and Head Brewer Addy Fitter from Rocks Brewing Company out in Alexandria.

This was such a great and informative chat with both of these blokes, who have years and years of collective experience in the brewing industry. After starting out bouncing around gypsy and contract brewing enabling them to build a solid brand, they eventually invested in stainless steel which gave birth to the Rocks Brewing Co in 2013.

Both guests clearly know their stuff, dropping gems of information left right and centre on what not to do when starting out and commonly overlooked aspects of when planning your brewery. We also heavily dive into the world of gypsy and contract brewing, which is another great model to consider when starting out. Get your note pad ready and have a quick finger on the pause and rewind button as there is too much info in this episode to digest in one sitting.

  • Meet The Brewer Part 5 - Glenn Wignall from The Grifter Brewing Co.
    Dec 8 2020

Part 5 of the  Meet The Brewer Series, where we sit down with Co-Founders and Head Brewers from local Sydney breweries, to get their stories, insights and advice.

In today’s episode, I sit down with Co-Founder Glenn Wignall from The Grifter Brewing Co in Marrickville.

Glenn & co-founders Matt King & Trent Evans began their journey into the craft brewery scene by bouncing around the Inner West doing Gypsy brewing, fine tuning their recipes and finding a temporary haven with their own tank space at the Young Henry’s brewery in Newtown when they were just launching back in 2012. Building a solid brand and loyal following they took the opportunity to purchase Young Henry’s brewhouse equipment a couple years later, holding it in storage for sometime until they finally left the Young Henrys nest and finding their own physical premises and setting down roots in the Marrickville area.

Glenn has a lot of advice to give on equipment sourcing, gypsy brewing, as well as thoughts on a topic that hasn’t been spoken a lot about so far, and that is the importance of safety within a brewery and considerations for aspiring brewery owners around meeting Australian standards with their equipment and ensuring a safe workplace for your employees and customers.

  • Meet The Brewer Part 6 - James Harvey from Yulli's Brews
    Dec 15 2020

The final instalment of the Meet The Brewer Series. I head out to Alexandria to meet with Co-Founder James Harvey, AKA Harvs from Yullis Brews.

Originating back in 2014 out of a vegetarian restaurant in Surry Hills, Harvs and Co-Founder Karl Cooney immersed themselves into the commercial brewing industry by gypsy brewing all over Sydney and creating a cult following for their beers. The success of their gyspy brewing days allowed them to springboard themselves into their own physical brewery in Alexandria.

Harvs shares a great story of hard work and long hours, keeping it simple, organic growth, as well as thoughts around core ranges and some great industry insights.

  • Financing & Capital Raising (Part 1 of 2) - Jonny Wilkinson from Equitise
    Dec 22 2020

We now move into our topic specific segments of the podcast series, and a very early consideration in your brewery building journey should be considering how you are going to raise the necessary finance & capital for it.

In this episode I briefly cover some financial options available to aspiring brewer owners and entrepreneurs including Home Equity Loans and Angel Investing.

The interview that follows is my sit down chat with Jonny Wilkinson from Equitise. Equitise was one of the first equity based crowdfunding platforms in Australia after government legislation being passed making it legal back in 2018, following other countries such as the US and the UK.

If you have ever heard of reward based crowdfunding platforms such as Kickstarter and Pozible where start ups can launch campaigns with a fundraising target, in the hope of interested fans or onlookers who will donate money to it in exchange for some non-monetary return such as merchandise, novelties or the option to purchase their product or service that you helped fund. With equity based crowd funding, this allows interested investors to purchase equity and shares in a business on the platform.
