Brendan Fraser almost played Superman in the early 2000s, auditioning for a J.J. Abrams-scripted reboot titled Superman: Flyby. Fraser described the script, which he read under strict security, as "Shakespeare in space" and "a really good screenplay." However, details of the script, which significantly altered Superman lore (e.g., Krypton not exploding, Lex Luthor as a Kryptonian sleeper agent), leaked and were met with severe fan backlash. This negative fan reaction led Warner Bros. to abandon this version, an early instance of online fandom influencing a franchise's direction. Despite his appreciation for the script, Fraser later expressed relief that he didn't get the role, acknowledging that playing Superman often leads to typecasting for actors.
