Boris Johnson should stop defending the so-called "Boris wave" of hundreds of thousands of migrants who arrived legally in the UK when he was Prime Minister, a Tory grandee has said.
Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown, the treasurer of the 1922 committee of backbench Tory MPs which helps to select future leaders, said Johnson should be "seen and not heard".
