Welcome to the first episode of Beyond the Diamond.
I started this podcast because I want to give real insight to the next generation of Black baseball players chasing the dream of playing at the highest level. I’ve seen this game from travel ball to high school, Division I college baseball, and professional baseball, and I know there’s a side of the game people do not talk about enough.
In this episode, I share my story, how I got started, what baseball gave me, and what it taught me as the competition got tougher at every level. I talk about growing up in a baseball family in Chicago, learning to love the game, making the jump to travel ball, and realizing early that talent alone is not enough. I also get into the mental side of baseball, the politics that show up as you move up, the pressure that comes with expectations, and the reality of how the game changes when baseball becomes a business.
I also speak honestly about something that matters deeply to me: the experience of being a Black baseball player. The stereotypes are real. The labels are real. The lack of representation is real. Too many players have gone through this feeling of being overlooked, misunderstood, or alone, and I want this podcast to be a place where those stories can be told straight.
This episode covers:
- Why I started Beyond the Diamond
- My path from Chicago kid to pro baseball
- What changed for me in travel ball, high school, college, and pro ball
- Why rankings and outside opinions do not define you
- What I learned from failure, setbacks, and not getting rewarded when I felt I earned it
- The mental side of baseball and why it matters more than people think
- How Black players often have to deal with a different layer of pressure
- Why I want this show to help players, parents, and coaches see the game more clearly
If you are a baseball player trying to figure out your next step, a parent trying to understand what your son is carrying, or a coach who wants a clearer view of what players are really dealing with, this podcast is for you.
Follow Beyond the Diamond, share this episode with a player, parent, or coach, and send in your story. If something in this episode hit home for you, I want to hear about it.
This is just the beginning.
