Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the One who gives new birth loves also the one who has been born of Him. 1 John 5:1
- Parallelism
I. Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ…
- The doctrine of faith, belief, ties into all of the most fundamental, primary doctrines of Scripture: God, man, salvation, God’s Word.
- All historic Reformed confessions and catechisms dedicate an entire section/chapter (sometimes more) on the subject of faith.
- All systematic theologies must dedicate a significant portion to the subject of faith, otherwise it would not be systematic.
II. What does this mean—that Jesus is the Christ?
- Christ means anointed, but for what purpose?
- See sermon: “Beloved, You Are from God & Have Overcome | 1 John 4:4”
- To rightly understand and accept Him as the divinely prophesied Messiah and Savior, according to the Scriptures
III. Christ our Prophet, our Priest, our King
- Isaiah 61:1-3, the Christ is Prophet, Priest, King
- Matthew Henry: “As Isaiah was authorized and directed to proclaim liberty to the Jews in Babylon, so was Christ, God’s messenger, to publish a more joyful jubilee to a lost world.”
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.
