  • Break the Plateau: Rethinking Your Training with Karin
    Jul 28 2025
While Kyle is out of town, The Back of the Pack Podcast hands the mic to one of our favorite guest hosts — Karin Velez from the Just Grow Something Podcast. This week, Karin brings her science-based expertise and Marine Corps mindset to explore the power of novel stimulus in your running routine. She explains how runners often hit a plateau — mentally and physically — due to a concept called General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS). When your training becomes predictable, your body stops responding. Enter the SAID principle — Specific Adaptation to Imposed Demands — which explains why changing things up is key to unlocking progress. Karin shares how to keep your runs interesting without overtraining, burnouts, or breakdowns, using real-world tactics and military discipline. If you’ve been stuck in a rut, this episode is your blueprint for shaking things up and sparking new growth — without losing your back-of-the-pack spirit.

  • Run the Nation: Flat Miles & Fierce Pride
    Jul 25 2025
This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast: Second Wind, we bring our Run the Nation series home with a celebration of the heartland — the Central States. From the wide-open plains of Kansas to the lakeside charm of Minnesota and the rolling hills of Missouri, we highlight ten essential races that showcase the region’s quiet strength and undeniable running spirit. Kyle reflects on his own roots in this part of the country, where runners are humble, weather-tough, and always cheering for each other no matter the pace. Whether you’re gunning for a PR on a flat Nebraska course or just trying to survive the hills of Kansas City, the Midwest has something for every runner. We’ll talk about the race culture, unpredictable weather, and that distinct community vibe that makes these miles feel more grounded and more real. If you’ve ever trained in sideways wind or finished a race with frost in your beard and a smile on your face, this one’s for you.

  • Hills, Heat, and Argo Road: The Group Run from Hell
    Jul 21 2025
This week on The Back of the Pack Podcast, we head to Buckner, Missouri for one of the most brutal events you’ve probably never heard of — Summer Argo. Calling it a “race” might be generous, since this officially classified “group run” skips the timing mats, aid stations, and course monitors in favor of raw grit and punishing hills. With over 2,200 feet of elevation gain, no closed roads, and a 9:00 a.m. summer start time designed to turn up the heat, this event is less about medals and more about survival. Only 46 runners dared sign up — 44 showed up, and every single one of them finished. In this episode, we break down the challenge, the community, and what it takes to conquer Argo Road when the sun is high and the pavement’s melting. No shade, no shortcuts — just sweat, suffering, and a whole lot of character-building. If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to run straight into the fire, this one’s for you.

Sorry for the audio issues! We'll have it cleaned up by next episode!
