The ‘Asthma with Experts’ podcast – the place where clinical experts share their personal approaches to management of asthma. features discussions with expert clinicians. The podcast is hosted by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA). It is a resource for doctors and health care professionals in primary care and adult and paediatric doctors who are not respiratory specialists.

Asthma is a serious global health problem, affecting approximately 300 million people around the world, and causing around 1,000 deaths per day. Most of these deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries, and most of them are preventable. Asthma interferes with people’s work, education and family life, especially when children have asthma. Asthma is becoming more prevalent in many economically developing countries, and the cost of asthma treatment for healthcare systems, communities and individuals is increasing.

The podcast ‘Asthma for Experts’ which is hosted by GINA (www.ginasthma.org) is intended for primary care doctors and other health care professionals, and also for adult and paediatric general medical specialists in secondary care. The main aim is to increase awareness of asthma and provide expert views on evidence based practice for clinicians. The podcast will be informative for listeners, however please note that the information must not be used or interpreted as medical advice for people with asthma. If you have got asthma, you must talk with your healthcare provider about what is right for you and your asthma, and what is relevant to the health system where you live.

    This episode of 'Asthma with Experts' which is hosted by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), DR Alan Kaplan, a general practitioner in Canada shares his views and experience in our discussion on managing asthma exacerbations/attacks in primary care.

    Alan shares his approach to the management of patients consulting with respiratory symptoms which he thinks are due to an asthma attack. He takes us through the process of assessment, treatment, monitoring and how he decides whether to admit someone or send them home. We also discuss safety advice and follow up of the patient after the attack has been managed

    This podcast is targeted mainly for doctors working in primary care, but it will also be helpful for doctors in secondary care who are not asthma specialists.

  • Difficult -to-Treat and Severe Asthma

    In this episode of 'Asthma with Experts', hosted by the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA), Professor Guy Brusselle, an adult pulmonologist in Belgium, shares his views and experience in a dialogue about diagnosis and treatment of difficult-to-treat and severe asthma in adolescents and adults. These patients can suffer from frequent symptoms and frightening, unpredictable attacks.

    It is important to identify patients who may have severe asthma, and to differentiate them from those with difficult-to-treat asthma. They need to be referred to respiratory specialists promptly for evaluation, diagnosis and treatment.

    This podcast is targeted mainly for doctors working in primary care, but it will also be helpful for those in secondary care who are not asthma specialists.
