The Artemis 2 crew has broken the Apollo 13 distance record, travelling more than 407,000 kilometres from Earth, marking the first human journey around the moon since Apollo 17 in 1972. The mission includes the first female astronaut to travel around the moon and aims to establish regular lunar missions as part of long-term space operations. The lunar programme is designed to use the moon as an operational base for satellite deployment, AI infrastructure, and more cost-effective space operations that will benefit Earth-based applications in agriculture, bushfire management, and communications technology.
