Aran Island Discs is an intimate, Irish-hearted interview podcast that uses music as a gateway to the personal histories of Ireland’s most notable figures.

Set against the imagined, windswept backdrop of the Aran Islands off Ireland's west coast, the series reimagines the classic "castaway" format for a modern Irish audience. Hosted by Rossa McDermott, each episode invites a guest—from the worlds of sport, business, media, and the arts—to curate the "soundtrack of their life."

The Aran Islands serve as a powerful metaphor for resilience, reflection, and raw honesty. As guests introduce their chosen tracks, they unlock candid stories of childhood ambitions, defining setbacks, personal triumphs, and the mentors who shaped them. The music is not the destination; it is the doorway into deeper human truths.

Core Themes
  • Irishness: Exploring what it means to be Irish in the modern world and how heritage influences character.
  • Resilience: A recurring focus on "grit" and how guests have navigated the "Atlantic-sized" challenges in their careers and personal lives.
  • Music as Memory: Using specific songs to trigger "sliding doors" moments and emotional vulnerability that standard interviews often miss.

Reviews

Aran Island Discs is more than just a "Irish version" of a BBC classic. It is a masterclass in empathetic interviewing that treats its guests as people first and "notables" second. It has successfully carved out a niche in the crowded Irish podcast market by being both nostalgic and intensely contemporary.

When Conor Niland was 16, he got the chance to hit with Serena Williams at Nick Bollettieri's famed tennis academy. Conor, the Irish junior number one, was feeling a bit homesick. Serena, also 16, already owned her own house beside the academy. Conor Niland knows what it's like when Roger Federer walks into the dressing room ('Ciao, bonjour, hello!'), and he has had the exquisitely terrible experience of facing Novak Djokovic in the world's biggest tennis stadium - while suffering from food poisoning. But he never reached the very top.
