An island in peril

The island of Great Nicobar is one of India's remotest spots. It is here that the government is planning a Rs 72,000-crore project to build a massive container terminal, India's largest. It size and location raise troubling questions about the environmental impact on a protected biosphere--which is also the last home of the Shompen and Jarawa tribals--as well as the issue of commercial viability.
