    Jack underwent routine gall-bladder and hernia surgery under full anaesthesia, during which he experienced a profound near-death–like state marked by heightened clarity, peace, and an expanded sense of consciousness. He perceived himself separate from his physical body, observed the operation from above, and then found himself in a luminous, nurturing environment filled with overwhelming wellbeing, love, and understanding, where time and fear did not exist. Jack intuitively sensed the presence of people connected to him and an unspoken knowing that he must return, after which he awoke in recovery with an intense feeling of loss at leaving that state. The experience left him deeply changed, convinced that consciousness exists beyond the brain, that life continues beyond physical death, and that this awareness is natural, timeless, and independent of religious doctrine.

Although he deeply resists returning to Earth, he ultimately chooses to do so, knowing his task will involve suffering and uncertainty, and awakens back in his physical body with only partial memory of what he was shown.
