In this focused review, we examine acute and chronic pancreatitis, including pancreatic autodigestion, inflammatory mechanisms, and life-threatening complications. This episode reviews risk factors such as gallstones and alcohol use, classic assessment findings including severe epigastric pain radiating to the back, laboratory interpretation of elevated amylase and lipase levels, and diagnostic imaging. Emphasis is placed on recognizing Cullen’s and Grey Turner’s signs, monitoring for hypocalcemia and hyperglycemia, understanding NPO management and pancreatic rest, and preventing complications such as hypovolemia, pseudocyst formation, respiratory compromise, and multisystem organ failure. Nursing care priorities, medication management, nutritional therapy, and patient education are discussed to strengthen clinical judgment and safe patient care.
