  • Ep. 40 - How Daryl Davis Talks To People Who Hate Him
    Jan 23 2026
In this wide-ranging conversation, renowned musician and activist Daryl Davis shares the remarkable origin story of his unconventional approach to combating racism—from his unique upbringing as an American embassy kid traveling the world, to his shocking introduction to racial hatred at age 10 during a Cub Scout parade, to the night a Klansman bought him a drink in a Maryland bar.

Davis explains the philosophy behind his decades-long mission to sit down with white supremacists, detailing the psychological roots of hatred and the surprising pathways that lead ordinary people into extremist groups. Drawing on his experiences befriending over 200 individuals who have left hate organizations, Davis offers insights into today's fractured political landscape and makes the case that ignorance—not anger—is the true enemy that must be defeated through education and exposure.

I'm not a podcast fan - too many political/cultural podcasts are loud, abrasive, and preaching to the choir. Jeff Charles is a refreshing change.
He provides history and context for the topics, and encourages the listener to research and evaluate, not just accept his views. I appreciate that he provides sources for information!
I might not always share his view, but I am challenged to do more digging to come to my own understanding. He makes me THINK about my cultural views, and helps me undertand other viewpoints. He's funny, too. 😄
