With British attacks on the rise, the Second Virginia Assembly held an emergency session. PATRICK HENRY arrived in Richmond with a single goal. He rose from his seat with no notes in hand.
“If we wish to be free, we must fight!” He shouted. “An appeal to arms, and to the God of Hosts is all that is left us. For the next gale that sweeps from the North will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms. Our brethren are already in the field. Why stand we here idle?!”
Then came the legendary invocation that would echo across centuries: “I know not what course others may take; but as for me—give me liberty or give me death!”
By a narrow but decisive margin (65 to 60!) Virginia voted to prepare for war.
In that iconic lapboard church in Richmond, on that decisive day of March 23, 1775, American patriots arose from their slumber.
