  • Chris Jones defends the Courier Mail's decision to call the election early
    May 1 2025

It's been a big news week with the election campaign coming to a climax as polls suggest the election is all but over with Labor to triumph.

Peter Dutton’s office was defaced yet again, Magic Round has got underway with the Maroons loosing Game One of Women's Origin and it's been four decades since Expo 88.

Courier Mail Editor Chris Jones told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, " I think the biggest change, as we saw in Canada this week with their election, is that ironically, Donald Trump has hurt the Conservative vote all around the world.

These are now uncertain times and at uncertain times, you tend to see electorates stick with the incumbent, stick with what you know and I think that's what we're heading for here," Jones said.

  • Shane Chelepy 'really pleased' with new DV laws allowing immediate protection orders
    May 1 2025

It is Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month with the State Government passing new laws this week which will allow the police to issue on-the-spot 12 month Protection Directions and reduce victim trauma.

Today is also day 5 in the inquest into the Bondi Massacre with the inquest hearing that the Queensland man was on the Queensland Police Service's radar while living in his hometown of Toowoomba.

QPS Acting Police Commissioner Shane Chelpy told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "I'm really pleased to see those laws go into parliament this week."

"The use of a police protection direction will see that close to two thirds of the domestic and family violence offences that we turn up to now will be able to issue an immediate police protection direction to give that victim survivor protection right there on the spot for 12 months."

"We know that a domestic and family violence current order takes four to five hours for a police officer to take out."

"We're expecting these to be under an hour, but the most important thing is it'll free up that police time, which will allow the police to focus on our victim survivors," Acting Commissioner Chelepy said.

  • Andrew Abdo says no guarantee Magic Round will stay in Brisbane beyond 2027
    Apr 30 2025

The greatest weekend on the NRL calendar is upon us.

Magic Round kicks off tonight with Women’s State of Origin, the Brisbane Broncos will take on Penrith on Sunday afternoon, followed by the Storm and the three other Queensland teams will also be in action.

It is estimated 200,000 people will visit the River City for Magic Round and over 6 million will watch on TV.

NRL CEO Andrew Abdo told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, "Three years is a long time and we want to continue to build and make Magic Round even more special."

"Keep adding things, keep breaking records and I must be honest, the Queensland Government has been terrific to deal with."

"They believed in us right in the beginning, this was just an idea in 2017, they headed the launch in 2019 and they've been terrific partners and we will continue to work and keep building to 2027," Andrew Abdo said.

"And then when the time's right, we'll have a conversation around where Magic Round goes afterwards."

"Obviously if we keep growing it like we are now, then this is a terrific place."

"People do enjoy travelling to see games at Suncorp Stadium."

"So we don't take that for granted, but obviously nothing is locked in beyond 2027," Mr Abdo continued.
