The medical establishment rejected his findings because they contradicted existing norms, lacked the theoretical backing of germ theory, and were presented with an unprofessional and abrasive demeanor. This opposition led to his dismissal from his Vienna hospital, the poor reception of his 1861 book, and ultimately, a mental breakdown and death in asylum
