#31 | the billable hour is a dinosaur

Last weekend I spoke at the Washington State Bar Association Solo/Small Firm Annual Conference about alternative fee arrangements.

I got peppered by law firm owners just like you for an hour about everything related to setting great fees, collecting great fees, and doing it in a way that makes clients, and lawyers, happy.

Here are a few of the takeaways.

The billable hour sucks because as you get better at what you do (i.e. more efficient) you make LESS money.

The billable hour sucks because it sets up a confrontational relationship with clients.

The billable hour sucks because it chains you to your desk, for LIFE.

It's possible to do flat fee arrangements with litigation, if you a la carte it, adjusting your fee as you go and get a feel for the complexity and involvement of the specific case.

The important psychological thing to remember is that you don't have to get it right every time. No single case is going to make or break you. Just do your best!
