कुछ इस तरह से बनता है कथानक इस कहानी का। आचार्य हज़ारी प्रसाद द्विवेदी की लेखनी का कमाल है कि उपनिषदों की पृष्ठभूमि में एक बहुत ही मासूम और प्यारी सी प्रेमकथा को चित्रित कर देते हैं। साथ ही साथ उपनिषदों की व्याख्या व समझने का प्रयास, मानव जीवन की विभिन्न परिस्थितियों में विचारों के मानसिक द्वंद्व व उनके उत्तर ढूंढने का प्रयास इस उपन्यास की महत्त्वपूर्ण विशेषताएँ व कहना चाहिए कि उपलब्धियाँ भी है।

और हाँ, ऋषिपुत्र रैक्व की पीठ में खुजली का क्या रहस्य है, या वो एक टूटी बैलगाड़ी के नीचे क्यों बैठा है, ये बातें तो किताब पढ़ कर ही पता लगाई जाएँ!
