152. Super Mario Bros (1993)

This week, we review Super Mario Bros. (1993), Rocky Morton and Annabel Jankel’s wildly offbeat sci-fi adventure based (very loosely) on the beloved Nintendo video game. Bob Hoskins and John Leguizamo star as Brooklyn plumbers Mario and Luigi, who find themselves pulled into a dystopian alternate dimension ruled by the villainous King Koopa, played with lizardy menace by Dennis Hopper. With de-evolution guns, fungus-based tech, and a plot that veers as far from the Mushroom Kingdom as possible, this film reimagines the game’s bright, bouncy world into a gritty cyberpunk nightmare.
