Charlie Wakefield was a park ranger at Devil’s Tower National Monument in Wyoming. Charlie was a man that enjoyed his job. He wasn’t just a park ranger that would give guided tours or answer the many questions the tourists had. If fact, Charlie never really had to answer many questions, if any at all. The tourists he dealt with were usually too scared to ask him any questions.
Many tourists came to Devil’s Tower each year, many of those tourists came to climb the almost nine-hundred-foot tall, vertical sides of the Tower. It was Charlie’s job to go up and rescue the climbers that managed to get themselves stuck or had become too afraid to move. It was something that seemed to happen a few times every week.
One tragic day, a girl fell four hundred feet off the Tower and to her death. Soon after, Charlie was contacted by the girl’s boyfriend, an investigative reporter from the Cheyenne Reporter.
Charlie sensed trouble.
Charlie was right, trouble soon followed. But it was not the kind of trouble Charlie was expecting. It was the kind of trouble that had to be avoided at any cost. But, in order to do that, Charlie was not happy with the choice he had to make. He felt like he had just made a deal with the devil.
