Acerca de esta escucha
Did you know we have 100,000 heartbeats a day? That's a lot of wear and tear over the years as we age.
Natural aging leads to artery plaque, high blood pressure, and slower and irregular heartbeats. You can do everything right, and time will still pass. You will still age. While you can influence some aspects of aging on your own, some you cannot - at least not without your doctor's help.
Fortunately, the biology of aging is no longer mysterious. Heart and blood vessel health is knowable, measurable, and manageable. In You Can Prevent a Stroke, Dr. Joshua Yamamoto and Dr. Kristin Thomas help us understand what we can do, and what we can ask of our doctors, to manage the effects of aging on our circulation so that we do not have a stroke. For years, they have approached patients with the fundamentals learned at The Johns Hopkins Hospital: "Take responsibility for your patient's health, go in-depth, have an unswerving commitment to solving problems, be thorough, thoughtful, and have attention to detail."
Strokes are usually said to be tragic and random. They are certainly tragic, but they are not random. Strokes can be avoided, and You Can Prevent a Stroke explains how.

Many antidepressants - the first line in our standard of care for treating depression - bring with them potential health risks, yet one in six Americans takes medication to alleviate feeling sad, anxious, stuck, or unable to focus or sleep. More and more, conventional medicine pathologizes how we respond to life's challenges - like feeling trapped in an unfulfilling job, grieving the death of a loved one, or being anxious about a bad relationship - telling us that they're symptoms of disease.

For all the love and attention we give dogs, much of what they do remains mysterious. Just think about different behaviors you see at a dog park. We have a good understanding of what it means when dogs wag their tails, but what about when they sniff and roll on a stinky spot? What goes on in dogs' heads and hearts-and how much can we know and understand? Canine Confidential has the answers. Written by Marc Bekoff, it not only brilliantly opens up the world of dog behavior, but also helps us understand how we can make our dogs' lives the best they can possibly be.

Historia
The idea of a missing link between humanity and our animal ancestors predates evolution and popular science and actually has religious roots in the deist concept of the Great Chain of Being. Yet, the metaphor has lodged itself in the contemporary imagination, and new fossil discoveries are often hailed in headlines as revealing the elusive transitional step, the moment when we stopped being "animal" and started being "human". In The Accidental Species, Henry Gee, longtime paleontology editor at Nature, takes aim at this misleading notion.

Historia
Atrial fibrillation strikes one in four American adults. Not only do people suffering from this condition suffer from shortness of breath, fatigue, chest discomfort, decreased ability to exercise and do activities of daily living, arrhythmia, and palpitations, but their risk of a stroke, cognitive decline and dementia, heart failure, or premature death also shoots way up. Today, a whole new body of research - one most physicians are unaware of - shows that biomarker and lifestyle optimization may put half the cases of atrial fibrillation into remission without drugs or procedures.

Historia
In Cured, Dr. Rediger digs down to the root causes of illness, showing how to create an environment that sets the stage for healing. He reveals the patterns behind healing and lays out the physical and mental principles associated with recovery: first, we need to physically heal our diet and our immune systems. Next, we need to mentally heal our stress response and our identities. Through rigorous research, Dr. Rediger shows that much of our physical reality is created in our minds. Our perception changes our experience, even to the point of changing our physical bodies.

A superbly written and narrated book. Dr. Yamamoto’s book is packed with expert knowledge that is presented clearly - and with a dose of wit. A wonderful book for anyone with a heart and, in my opinion, essential for anyone over 40 years of age.

Mixed feelings from a mixed message
Mixed message? Well, he started with a promising disdain for too many meds. Then he continued with statements that you HAVE to take meds. Period.
Embarrassingly high number of obsolete, never backed by science or clinical experience recommendations like taking statins or daily aspirin etc.
Overall I would say that the book is helpful but not without serious flaws in the messaging.

Provides convincing data about statins but fails to mention its dangerous side effects
The first time I listened to this, I thought it was brilliant. The author gave pretty convincing information as to why we should be taking statins to prevent a stroke. But since I am ever so curious about health, a few months later, I picked up another book from audible called the cholesterol myth, and there was an alarming chapter in it about how statins have some very dangerous side effects, such as the weakening of the heart, and how it impedes memory functions and learning. Basically, statins also have a side effect of making you stupid while weakening your heart because statins also impede the production of coq10. And it also destroys testosterone and causes you to lose your sex drive. So, do your research, read up on the benefits of statins but most importantly read up on its weaknesses. Statins have been pushed heavily by the pharmaceutical industry but they have failed to also highlight the data that has hurt many of those who have taken them.
