Hunter and Lily - Second Chance

Lila Winters is excellent in this one, and Chris Brinkley can do no wrong in my opinion!

Iris Black is Hunter Buchanan's one. She had a bit of a rough upbringing and her own family drama made her make the decision to break up with Hunter a dozen years ago. They both moved away from Green Valley, and Hunter had married a woman who didn't actually hold his heart. Iris moved back to Green Valley a few years ago, now that she had primary custody of her younger brother. And after his divorce, Hunter ended up moving back too.

She's still not ready to let him all the way in, still resistant to fully trust. Still carrying around the baggage of her currently incarcerated mother's behavior. Hunter is willing to be patient, but they still have a bit of a bumpy road before they finally get to their happily ever after.

This entire series is amazing. The Buchanan family and all their loved ones are just the kind of people I'd want in my corner.

This can be read as a stand-alone, but was a really satisfying end to this series.

Definitely worth the wait!!

Hunter and Iris’s long awaited small town reunion is loaded with emotional landmines as the newly divorced last Buchanan-cursed holdout returns to Green Valley to reunite with his family and teach summer school. I loved how fate lends a helping hand when one of Hunter’s assignments is a gifted, rebellious, 10 year old student named Theo who is about to flunk fourth grade and who just happens to be the half brother of Hunter’s long lost fated love, Iris, who he has pined for the last 12 years. Hunter is everything I look for in a book hero with his gentle nature, his palpable yearning for Iris, and his insight into why it’s so difficult for her to trust in an all consuming love when she’s been forced to believe that the only one she can only rely on is herself. Iris is hard working and fiercely independent but she longs for Hunter while she fights her instincts due to the emotional scars from the lifelong machinations of her narcissistic and neglectful mother. I was endlessly entertained by the well meaning but somewhat obnoxious romantic interference of Hunter’s mother, and Iris’s pseudo grandmother figure, who are the typical sneaky southern matriarchs in search of the possibility of babies to cuddle. Unfortunately the total lack of details surrounding Hunter’s failed marriage, his years away from Green Valley, and his estrangement from his family was disappointing. I can’t imagine not being interested in the details of Hunter’s myriad feelings if I were his significant other. All in all Hunter and Iris’s romance is appealing and empowering thanks to the excellent vocal acting performances of Chris Brinkley who oozes sexy, confident charm, and Lila Winters who embodies Iris with her tenacious but soft hearted vulnerability. The complex storytelling and compelling audiobook narration was definitely worth the wait.

Not worth the wait

So every now and then I try a book and really don't like it. I'll return a book and get my credit back. I am more upset that this one is ineligible to return. Even though Chris Brinkley is a great narrator, he could not salvage this one. If you have listened to others in this series and have FOMO, let me help you with the story:
He returns, shocked to find his one true love there. You know they will end together but in the mean time the will have flash backs of numerous sexual encounters when teenagers while running into each other in town. and they get together for more perfect passionate sex. He changes her younger brother's life for the better, she somehow has $20k to throw to her junkie mom getting out of jail as well as open a store. Old ladies in the town help bring them together. His family buys her a velvet green couch. His sister-in-law goes into labor in her store. They are together. Oh, they are both have perfect physical bodies. And like libraries. But they write in the books.
