A fantastic finish to an epic series!

It isn't very often that I have a WOW experience with a book. Much less a whole series. But Erik Henry Vick has pulled it off brilliantly with Blood of the Isir!

As I've come to expect, Alexander Cendese gives us a fantastic performance. He's one of the few narrators out there who can pull off convincing male and female voices, and while there's not a ton of variation in his feminine voices, it's enough that it's easy to tell characters apart. His vocal inflections are spot on, and his variations on tempo perfectly match the tension in any given scene.

All told, this is one of those stories that can be accurately described as an experience rather than a book. By the time we get to this one, there are already so many plot threads being weaved together that it's hard to see how they can all be resolved by the end.

Which is impressive in a book largely told in the first person. The honest truth is I almost stopped reading the first book on account of the first person narrative as I typically hate the style.

But I am so, so, so glad that I stuck with it!

Falling somewhere in the intersection of urban fantasy, dark fantasy, science fiction, and Norse Mythology, Blood of the Isir is easily one of the most creative, most imaginative stories out there.

While it can be a little frustrating at times, I love the usage of foreign/made up (not really sure which!) words for various things, the magic being just one aspect. And the way Norse Mythology has been twisted to create something entirely unique is absolutely fascinating.

Now, my minor critiques.
There were a couple of points where I was a little confused about who was who, but I think this is largely on account of it having been a few months since I listened to the first two books.

In fairness, this is not the most elegant, most beautifully written piece of genre fiction. Some aspects of the prose do leave something to be desired.

But the language is clear; the dialogue is realistic, natural, and engaging; and the descriptions are detailed and evocative.

I think I've mentioned this in my reviews of all three books, but it bears repeating that I absolutely love the interactions between Hank and Jane! It just feels so real, so authentic. Anyone who's been married for more than a year or two will understand that this is just how married couples interact after a while. And it's fantastic to see it played out accurately in fiction!

I love that throughout everything in the series, Hank's one overriding goal is still front and center. From the very beginning it has all been about keeping his wife and son safe and even throughout all the other crazy things that happen throughout the series, even at the end that's his one overriding motivation.

Now, if you've been reading this series then you'll know that there's a character from Norse Mythology whose stories have been closely approximated by Hank's experiences.

I truly hope I'm not alone in seeing this. I also hope that I was meant to see it.

If, like me, you've been seeing it, then let me just reassure you that it is not coincidental and it's not without purpose. It is leading somewhere.

Speaking of which, the ending. In light of some other aspects of the story, I really shouldn't have been surprised by the ending, but I was. There are some truly epic, incredible things brought into this book that definitely raise the epic rating and make for an awesome and memorable finale to the series.

And there is a decent twist pretty much right that the end that answers a lot of questions and makes the whole story so much more awesome!
