Deborah L. Cox is a licensed psychologist, EMDR therapist, and artist, board certified in Couple and Family Psychology, who practices in Springfield, Missouri where she co-hosts the ReConceive podcast.

I was completely absorbed!

Following elizabeth and her story was absolutely incredible. I could not stop listening. I grew up in a strict religious household and found many of Elizabeth's struggles and feelings to be very close to home. The author has written an honest, at times funny, always copelling and honest account of what it can be like when "trapped" in your religion.

Not Your Typical Escape Story

This audiobook pulled me into a tough world of strict rules and hidden pain that felt so intense and real. It was hard to listen at times because of how raw the struggles were, but that’s what made it stick. The story of breaking free and finding your own path was seriously gripping, and the narrator’s voice made the whole journey feel personal.

Unraveling obedience, one rule at a time

This audiobook hit harder than I expected. It captures the confusion of growing up in a faith that teaches silence and shame, and the slow unraveling that comes when you start asking questions you’re not supposed to. The moments of rebellion—small, tender, and often painful—felt incredibly human. It’s raw without being bitter, and somehow manages to hold grief and freedom in the same breath.

This audiobook hit me deeply. Growing up in a strict faith myself, I connected with Elizabeth’s struggle to find her voice in a world that silences women. It’s powerful, emotional, and painfully real at times. The narration adds even more depth, making her journey toward freedom unforgettable and inspiring.

I very much appreciated how this audiobook shows us a world that exists among us, yet that most of us may not know about. A really courageous, admirable step that can open doors to better understanding and insights into what others go through in their daily life.
