Why We Paint Rocks: 20 Answers to How Small Acts Help Organizations Thrive explores how small, often overlooked actions can drive lasting success. Divided into four parts:
Process
Stewardship
Hospitality
Each chapter pairs a leadership principle with real-world vignettes, offering practical takeaways for building stronger organizations and leaders.
Organizations rarely fall apart all at once. They unravel in the margins—where a missed follow-up, a forgotten courtesy, or a dropped standard quietly erodes performance, culture, and trust.
Why We Paint Rocks is a field guide for leaders who know the small stuff isn’t small. It's the first in the Why We Paint Rocks Series.
Whether you're a seasoned executive or just starting to lead, this book cuts through the complexity of leading change by answering:
Where do I begin to create lasting change?
How do I build pride and buy-in?
Why does painting rocks matter?
The answer lies in the little things—done deliberately, and done well.

©2025 Ryan J. Scott, PhD (P)2025 Ryan J. Scott, PhDI really appreciated how approachable and practical his ideas were—it didn’t feel like a typical leadership book full of jargon. Instead, it was inspiring and easy to apply right away. The narration was engaging, and I found myself pausing to reflect more than once.
Highly recommended for anyone who wants to make a difference in a simple but powerful way.
Small Actions, Big Impact

I started this book in print and did not want to put it down before a long drive so I also purchased on Audible- I'm glad I did. Hearing the passion in the author's voice added another level of impact for what is already a paradigm shifting mental model for leadership and personal success. The author's delivery is as striking and passionate as it is intimate- clearly a gifted speaker. Dr. Scott's message has particular resonance in a world where attention spans can be limited to reel lengths. He talks not only about the power of small acts, executed with excellence and consistency- but also gives the reader a framework to leverage when leading through ambiguity ...and to make sure the mistakes we make are new ones. I find myself applying his principles with intentionality both at work and in my personal life. I bought the book to be a better leader, but I can't help but notice this is the DNA that helps me a better person, too. There are examples of bravery detailed in this book to learn from - both on the battlefield and in conference rooms speaking truth to power- and I'm thankful to have Dr. Scott's tools in my own corporate arsenal. Highly recommend in both the print version (great visual reminder for me) and on Audible (really first class production value).
