All who minister to others, whether ordained or lay, must allow themselves to be shepherded by God, attentive to the voice of God. We all pray in the Spirit, rooted in Christ. Philip Seddon urges us not to be deflected from ‘whole Christ’ - as the Puritan, Richard Sibbes, termed Christ’s relationship with believers - by New Age thought. In ministry, we need to know how to use diverse sociological tools wisely alongside sound habits of prayer. Philip J. Seddon, born in 1945 to missionary parents, grew up in Morocco. He was ordained priest in 1971 and was Director of Ministry of STETS (Southern Theological Education and Training Scheme) at Sarum College, Salisbury for five years until his retirement in 2010. He had previously held theological and pastoral posts in Manchester, Nigeria, Nottingham, Cambridge and Birmingham. He was co-editor with Roger Pooley of ‘The Lord of the Journey: A Reader in Christian Spirituality’ (Collins 1986), and he has written a number of Grove booklets in the Spirituality Series.
