The stars above Cedar Key had been quiet for weeks, their usual shimmer dulled by the haze of recent storms, both cosmic and earthly. Peace, long craved and hard-won, had settled over the town. Emily, John, and Writer had returned not just as survivors but as guardians. Their bond was unbreakable now, their roles deeper than before.
But peace never lasted.
It began one night with Writer.
The dog stirred from sleep beneath the stilted porch of their coastal cottage. His golden eyes, once merely intelligent, now shimmered faintly with the same energy as the Veilstone. He tilted his head, ears pricking at something distant, something not of earth or sea.
“It’s back, ” he said quietly into the minds of the two humans he trusted most. “Or something like it. But… wrong.”
Emily sat upright in bed before the words finished forming. Her hand instinctively reached beneath the pillow where the Veilstone rested. It was cold.
John joined her, brow furrowed. “What do you mean, ‘wrong’?”
Writer’s gaze moved to the sky.
“There was a shimmer. But not like the first. This one flickers. It stutters. As if something is trying to speak through the veil… or break it.”
And then, for just a heartbeat, they all felt it —a pulse.
Not the warm glow of the Veilstone’s light, but something sharper. Hungrier.
Somewhere far beyond the stars… something stirred.
The Veilstone glowed faintly. And a new journey began.
