Acerca de esta escucha
HARLIE is the first self-aware intelligence engine. But instead of answers, he has questions—too many questions, and most of his questions have no answers at all.
First published in 1972, When HARLIE Was One was immediately hailed as a groundbreaking debut novel, examining the most fundamental question of all: What does it mean to be human?
Revised by the author in 1988, this expanded edition is available again. Despite all the progress in computer technology since then, When HARLIE Was One still has extraordinary power to touch the human heart.
Nominated for the Hugo and Nebula awards for Best Novel of the Year, its themes of love and discovery are even more important today than when first published.
Listen. Enjoy. Be inspired.

Historia
David Gerrold’s classic space opera Under the Eye of God tells the story of a group of unlikely rebels on a mission to reclaim the galaxy from ruthless vampire overlords known as the Phaestor. The dark, burnt world of Thoska-Roole, infamous for its harsh climate and equally callous inhabitants, might be the last place in the galaxy anyone would turn for aid in times of crisis. But the small, orange planet is home to the band of rebels who hold the fate of the entire galaxy in their hands.

Hella is a planet where everything is oversized. The trees are mile-high, the dinosaur herds are huge, and the weather is extreme - so extreme, the colonists have to migrate twice a year to escape the blistering heat of summer and the atmosphere-freezing cold of winter. Kyle is a neuro-atypical young man, emotionally challenged, but with an implant that gives him real-time access to the colony's computer network. When an overburdened starship arrives, he becomes the link between the established colonists and the refugees from a ravaged Earth.

Gerrold, a science fiction writer from California, adopts a son who has a slight behavioral problem. He believes himself to be a Martian. Gerrold begins the long, involving work of trying to earn the acceptance of Dennis, a hyperactive eight-year-old who desperately wants a father's love, but is so insecure he feels he must be an alien. Gerrold's semi-autobiographical memoir of the first two years with Dennis is a funny, endearing, heartbreaking, and beautifully written testament to fatherhood.

We were fighting on the wrong side of a war we couldn't win. And that was the good news. The Ruhar hit us on Columbus Day. There we were, innocently drifting along the cosmos on our little blue marble, like the native Americans in 1492. Over the horizon come ships of a technologically advanced, aggressive culture, and BAM! There go the good old days, when humans only got killed by each other. So, Columbus Day. It fits. When the morning sky twinkled again, this time with Kristang starships jumping in to hammer the Ruhar, we thought we were saved.

Neanderthals have developed a radically different civilization on a parallel Earth. A Neanderthal physicist, Ponter Boddit, accidentally passes from his universe into a Canadian underground research facility. Fortunately, a team of human scientists, including expert paleo-anthropologist Mary Vaughan, promptly identifies and warmly receives Ponter. Solving the language problem and much else is a mini-computer, called a Companion, implanted in the brain of every Neanderthal. But it can't help his fellow scientist back in his world, Adikor Huld, when the authorities charge Adikor with his murder.

Loved coming back to this book after many years.
I read the original back in Jr. High School. It was great listening to the audio version.

a bit of HAL 9000 here
I like when the classic scifi shows up and this was good, though it is perhaps a little dated. But not so much by technology as by all the computer intelligence references in pop culture, e.g. HAL 9000, DATA from pepsi generation, Matrix, etc. What surprised me was not that aspect so much because the story is actually about more than just AI, but that Gerrold rewrote the novel to update it due to tech advances and AI advances etc. and yet didn't incorporate an audio-visual input/speech device for the computer, but still had all communication done via keyboard. This is a minor thing but it does come to mind when you're listening. I also found it interesting that originally this was written AFTER 2001 & HAL 9000 and in a sense almost dated itself from day one.
Now, this being said, it is still a good novel and I like much about it, but it is not a whiz bang story and much more of a thinker posing ?s about what it means to be human as he tries to explain to Harlie various things. So that aspect of it I like very much and the idea of individual personalities and threats against them always affects me.
So while I can't say I loved it like Zanzibar recently, I am glad I got another classic in my head and there is a lot of very good corporate vs. science and humanity stuff that builds up.

An interesting read about fundamental truths
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
This is an interesting book about what it means to be human. Written many years ago, the story still stands the test of time even if the technology does not. There are plot lines that made perfect sense when it was written that seem implausible today. It's still a great story with brilliant characters.
Who was your favorite character and why?
HARLIE was my favorite. Nothing like a wise ass computer.. er.. silicone intelligence.
Which scene was your favorite?
The ending of course.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I've read the book several times and it would have been nice to listen in one sitting.
Any additional comments?
I so wish that a sequel would be written taking into account the advances in technology and social changes that have taken place.

Skip author’s preface!!!
I wish I had skipped the author’s preface before the story. It adulterated how I would have organically experienced the story and characters. Listen to it after if you want to hear it.
Having said that, I loved the story. Rolled my eyes many times at the “love” parts.
David Gerrold’s reading got monotone sometimes but the story is still very enjoyable.

It sorta felt like a summary of what could be a really long story. But what was there was an amazing read! I would've loved to hear about what Harlie would've done once he was one.

David Gerrold reading his own work for us. It doesn’t get any better than that! (I’ve been an unrepentant fan of his work since “Tribbles.” So, Yeah, I was going to enjoy the heck out of this, no question about it.)

Computer, human or God
A beautiful performance by the author himself of one of my favorite books. I can be difficult to follow and I admit that it probably won't appeal to the majority of traditional science fiction fans but if you can get through lengthy discussions on the nature of life, reality and what it means to be sentient you will find a surprisingly touching story of a computer named HARLIE learning how to be alive and a man named Auberson learning to appreciate the unique friendship that computer provides.
