Resumen del Editor

'This book isn't a memoir. It is a love letter to the phenomenon of autistic hyperfixation.'

A fascinating exploration of the autistic experience from leading advocate, Pete Wharmby.

In What I Want to Talk About, popular autism advocate Pete Wharmby takes listeners on a journey through his special interests, illuminating the challenges of autistic experience along the way. Funny, revealing, celebratory and powerful in equal measure, this is an audiobook that will resonate with many, and which should be required listening for anyone who wants to understand autism with more accuracy and empathy.

Excellent

Loved this book. The performance was great and the way each chapter is about a specific interest and explains autism from different angles is genius. I’m autistic and I would love to talk about the things I love like in this book. I think this could work for neurotypical folks to understand us a bit more!

Very Real and Authentic

I’m on a journey to learn more about autism, as my wife has been diagnosed in the past year. This book felt real and visceral to the way she experiences the world and a much needed perspective to help me better understand. Even question if I too may be autistic, great read all around

Relatable, Funny, Insightful

Fantastic book and reading with humor, passion, and insight. I laughed aloud often. My millennial memories rushed back and my experience as a father confirmed. Pete is a great voice in the community.

Unique and compelling take on Autism and Special Interests

Pete Wharmby uses parts of his life story and many of his own Special Interests to illustrate the importance of these interests to his life and ways they relate to his experience of autism. Along with learning a great deal about things like LEGO and The Titanic, Pete uses these interests to highlight both the positive aspects and many of the challenges of autism. Hearing Pete tell the story in his own voice was enjoyable and the dry wit and humor had me laughing out loud numerous times while listening to the book.

So helpful for understanding

I found this book so helpful in understanding some of my favorite people a bit better. Also, I’m struck by how much overlap there is between autism and a combo of ADHD and OCD, and where there are differences.

Enjoyed hearing it read by the author. His voice was engaging and enjoyable as well.

Brilliant and Comforting

I needed this book. As a late-diagnosed autistic adult, this narrative is so validating. This is what the world needs to hear in order to normalize our experience. Thank you for sharing your story, humor, and brilliance.

A Two Way Mirror Into Autism

So often special interests are framed as deficits or limitations, but Wharmby highlights how his special interests both helped him to escape the anxiety of everyday life and make sense of confusing social situations. You can feel the warmth and pure autistic joy he has for each subject!

Many autistic readers will recognize themselves in these pages: the stress of another social miscue, the need for escape, and the pure calm that descends when wrapped in your special interests.

For neurotypical readers this book offers a window into what it’s like to be autistic, especially someone late diagnosed. Wharmby does an excellent job highlighting several facets of autism (alexithymia, strong sense of justice, etc) while recounting how they affected him at various points in his life. Additionally he highlights ways we can make life easier for neurodivergent students.

And of course, Wharmby won’t pass on the chance to teach you about his special interests. I now know how many lifeboats were on the Titanic thanks to him!

Fantastic book about the autistic experience

For anyone that wants to learn about what it’s like to be autistic, I cannot recommend this book enough. I was recently diagnosed with autism at the age of 31 and since then I have read many books about autism. Out of all the books I’ve read, I related to this book the most. The book is humorous and informative and will keep you entertained from beginning to end.
