When his Secwépemc and St’at’imc father, an artist haunted by a turbulent past, abandoned the family, NoiseCat and his non-Native mother were embraced by the urban Native community in Oakland, California, as well as by family on the Canim Lake Indian Reserve in British Columbia. I won an ARC of 𝙒𝙚 𝙎𝙪𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙫𝙚𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙉𝙞𝙜𝙝𝙩
through a Goodreads giveaway a few months ago, but due to a very long TBR list, I'm just now getting around to reading it - in honor of Native American Heritage Month. The book itself is very well constructed and contains a full family tree and a pretty extensive glossary of tribal words and their translations in english. This really is a nice blend of memoir and a history book. I enjoyed it so much that I purchased the audiobook as well so I could hear the author read his own work and understand the proper pronunciations for many of the tribal words. There is some language and the mention of domestic and alcohol/substance abuse, but overall, I would highly recommend this book to mature readers.

One of the best books I’ve had the pleasure of reading this year. Julian is a wonderful storyteller.
