Jim McClain passes the Social Worker One test, completes orientation and reports for work in the Welfare building.

He is tasked with two caseloads of Ward 10 self-committed patients. It is an unfair situation and one that Jim is willing to accept to keep his job. Ultimately, it will be one of the factors in his decision about continuing to work in the department.

He meets Raney McLeod, another welfare worker, and they hit it off. She’s from Mississippi while Jim is from California. That geographic difference will impact their relationship.

Jim’s first three weeks on the job go smoothly, but the last week of the month is chaotic and drives him, along with other factors, to make a fateful decision.
