As the first crusaders leave for the Holy Land, the reluctent bureaucrat Count Edouard attempts to maintain order as religious and temporal factions struggle for control of the Empire and its treasury. Things become more complicated whn a young Monk, Henri Gilbert begins to hear voices telling him he is the long deceased Saint Martin. Edouard is duped into guiding a "Ship of Fools" supposedly sailing to the Holy land to join the crusade when in fact it is society's way of ridding itself of undesirables like Henri. The ship sails a much greater distance than mere miles as it leaves behind the dark night of superstition to enter the dawn of psychiatric treatment and hospice.
