The train eased to a stop with a sigh that seemed to echo Sofia’s own exhaustion. She stepped onto the platform, her heels clicking against sun-warmed stone, and the silence hit her first. No horns, no phones, no deadlines. Only the hum of bees in the olive trees and the rustle of vineyard leaves in the late-afternoon breeze.
For the first time in years, she could breathe. The jacket draped over her arm felt like the last relic of the life she’d left behind — endless emails and polite smiles that never reached her eyes.
When she saw the job posting on her phone — Vineyard assistant needed. Immediate start — she laughed out loud. She’d never worked with her hands, never so much as pruned a plant, but something inside her whispered yes. So she sent her résumé, added a note that said willing to learn, and boarded the next train south.

“You’re the English girl?” he asked.
“Sofia,” she said, trying to sound sure of herself. “You got my résumé.”
He grunted, tossed her a set of keys, and told her to start Monday. No interview, no contract. Just trust — or perhaps curiosity.
Outside, the rows of grapes stretched endlessly into the hills, bathed in light that made the air shimmer. Sofia tightened her grip on the keys, the metal warm in her palm. She had no idea what waited ahead, only that she didn’t want to turn back.
For the first time in years, she felt alive.
