One man leaves the life of a lawman behind him and works to clean up a new area in space.

On the planet now known as High Tortuga, the mine workers are far too close to being slaves so the ruler of the planet shut them down.

Except for the mine owned by Venfirdri Lan.

He's taken his mine off the grid and decided to keep everything running. With no need to pay the workers, profits should be good.

After all, who's going to stop him?

He had no idea there was a new type of man working for justice on the planet.

A man named Barnabas.

In fact, he didn't even know who Barnabas was. But he's about to.

Barnabas may not be Ranger One anymore, but one thing definitely has not changed: when someone screws over the powerless, Barnabas is going to bring the pain. With a bloodthirsty AI running his advanced spaceship, those who love evil should start looking over their shoulders.

Life just got a lot more fun.

Honestly I'm not sure how to review this book. I did enjoy it overall, but at times I was a bit lost. It really needed more setting and history development to give a more clear picture of what was going on. I liked the voices that the narrator gave to some of the characters, while other characters had slurpy mouth sounds or uneven speaking cadences that distracted me from the story... especially after I realized that the odd cadence sounded like Trump giving a political speech. The story was set in space with a variety of aliens and one character thought humans were just a myth, but the main character was apparently a vampire from Earth who served what I think was a human queen, and the Coke versus Pepsi debate was referenced multiple times. There were some apparently important female characters who were referenced throughout the book, but I never caught an explanation of who they actually were. (Characters from another series in this literary universe, maybe?) I think my favorite character was the ship's AI... she was a cheerfully sadistic addition to the story who made me laugh several times. Let that ship play with her flamethrower, and you'll make her day!

Coke vrs Pepsi

I enjoyed every page of this book. Barnabas and Shinigami were fantastic and so funny. Barnabas wanted to get this planet right again and Shinigami wanted to level it with missiles and flamethrowers. She did get to use her missiles but not the flamethrower, lol. Some of the creatures that inhabited the planet were awesome but especially Ubuara, who was a monkey and had a transplant of some kind so Barnabas could understand her.

No romance and the F-bomb was used 6 times.

As for the narration: As much as I like Scott Brick, Jay Snyder, Napoleon Ryan, Eric Dove and a few others, I can honestly say that Chris Andrew Ciulla was the BEST narrator I'd ever listened to. His expressions, his drollness, his smartassness, everything CAC said was just fantastic.

If I could I would give 10 stars..

This is a very shallow story.A Vampire haunted by his past on a planet of alien beings kill aliens for altruistic reasons. It could have been 15 minutes long and the story would not have changed.

If you do not love these characters skip this book
