When the dead get up, the guns last for weeks. The water lasts three days.

The System arrived the night after the dead did. It did not make anyone a hero. It read what people already were, off the licenses in their wallets, and reported the truth in flat capitals.

Vernon Dettmer, twenty-two years running a small city's water plant, drew PUBLIC WORKS, OPERATOR, GRADE III. People with combat classes laughed. Most of them were dead inside a month, and not one of the people drinking his water was.

Because his readout tells him what nothing else in the collapse will: the actual state of things. The chlorine left in the drums. The hours left in a bearing. The line at the top of the settlement sheet that reads STANDARD: NOT MET, and under it the number of days until that stops being a warning and starts being a body count.

His impossible move is telling people the real number.

The fuel, out loud. The food, out loud. The one number no leader wants to say: how many people the site can actually carry through winter, said to all of them, at a folding table, by lantern light.

The dead walk the fence line the whole time. They are weather. You design for them. What kills settlements is the latrine dug uphill of the water, the cut hand nobody looks at twice, the tank running dry while everyone watches the wire.

He has three days of chlorine, one old teacher, one fire captain who counts everything, and four wells standing two miles outside any fence anyone can build.

No combat class. No chosen one. No cure. The dead never get smarter, and the numbers never lie.

Book 1 of UTILITY CLASS, a five-book settlement-building apocalypse LitRPG about the man who keeps the water running, for listeners who want their survival earned in gallons, hours, and honest arithmetic.

Really liked the premise of this one, it took a different approach to the usual apocalypse story. Instead of making the main character some overpowered hero, Vernon’s strength came from knowing how to keep a community functioning, and I liked the focus on things like water, fuel, food, sanitation, and honest resource management. The idea that the settlement’s survival could depend on knowing exactly how many days of supplies were left made the story feel tense in a more realistic way.

I also liked that the dead stayed a constant threat in the background while the bigger danger came from the everyday problems that could bring a settlement down.

Overall, it's a great choice for anyone who enjoyed LitRPG but wants a survival story built around strategy, logistics, and actually earning survival rather than simply leveling up.

I really enjoyed how different this apocalypse story felt from the usual LitRPG setup. Vernon isn’t some overpowered fighter or chosen hero he’s a water plant operator, and his knowledge of keeping people supplied with clean water becomes one of the most important things in the entire settlement. I liked that the story focuses on practical survival: fuel, food, water, sanitation, supplies, and the hard decisions that come with limited resources.

The System also works really well because it doesn’t magically solve everything. Vernon gets information, but he still has to figure out what to do with it and convince other people to listen. The idea of openly telling everyone the actual numbers, including how many people the settlement can realistically support, made the leadership side especially interesting.

I really enjoyed listening to this one. I liked that the story focuses more on keeping people alive through things like water, food, fuel, and basic survival instead of making the main character some unstoppable hero. Vernon’s practical approach made the story feel different from the usual apocalypse books, and I found myself wanting to keep listening to see how the settlement would handle each problem.

This is a refreshingly realistic take on post apocalyptic LitRPG. Instead of a flashy combat and overpowered stats, water plant veteran Vernon Dettmer uses cold hard logistics, infrastructure management, and public works planning to keep a settlement alive through zombie collapse. J. Scott Bennett’s steady, grounded voice fits Vernon’s pragmatic character perfectly. It’s a compelling, slow burn survival story for anyone who appreciates smart, resource focused base building. i recommend

I really enjoyed this book because instead of focusing only on fighting and leveling up this book gave me alot of attention to create a community and figuring out how to survive very long in any situation that comes, it made the world feel more developed and it gives the characters something more meaningful to work toward with. Overall it was an amazing book to read with a nice balance of action, strategy and progress.
